I decided to take a hiatus from work for almost a year, as I needed to reconfigure the direction that I wanted my work to take. I kept my hands moving, but purposefully did not produce any finished pieces until the beginning of 2013.
I came up with a series of portraits dealing with issues in the African-American culture. I got close friends, family, and other relatives to pose for me.
I felt that this fit the "Yesterday" challenge, as it addresses the paper bag test. My parents, who grew up during Jim Crow, often spoke of being either lighter or darker than a paper bag. This cruel test either made you acceptable in circles or the object of ridicule. The guy posing for this is my Dad.
The painting is not finished. I still plan to add a few elements.
More posting soon...
Have a great week.
